Dans Rock Bird Count (2023)

We're so pleased to welcome Josh Heiser to lead our second season of the Dans Rock Bird Count. We'll continue gathering valuable migration data from the iconic Dans Rock Overlook, which is located south of Frostburg at the highest point in Allegany County, Maryland. The count will document fall bird migration here from August 1st through November 30th.

If you would like to support this effort, please donate via the link above. You can monitor updates via Trektellen and eBird as well as via the MBP special projects blog and on social media (MBP on Facebook and Instagram).

◆ Joshua Heiser

A native of Montgomery County, Josh has been birding in Maryland for as long as he can remember and credits his exceptional bird ID skills to his time spent with the Youth Maryland Ornithological Society in high school. His passion has led him to conduct bird surveys for the Pennsylvania DCNR and the National Park Service, assist with banding efforts at the Erie Bird Observatory, win a handful of birding competitions, and start an Audubon Campus Chapter at his undergraduate institution. A recent alumnus of Allegheny College in northwestern Pennsylvania, Josh is thrilled to be back birding in his home state and contributing to the Maryland Biodiversity Project’s monitoring work. He's honored to be heading the Dans Rock morning flight count in its second year and excited to see what more it will reveal about fall migration in the region.
